Meet Today’s POP Songwriters

Although you will likely recognize their songs, you may not know the names or faces of many of the best songwriters in pop music today. While some artists write and perform their own music, often times there is a different songwriter behind the scenes penning the hits and passing them along to a superstar to record.

It’s often the case that the term famous songwriters is a bit of an oxymoron but we want to give these pop songwriters the credit they deserve. Here are some of the top songwriters in the world of modern pop music and why you should remember their names:

Ryan Tedder – As lead vocalist of OneRepublic, Ryan Tedder has definitely made a name for himself in the music industry but also remains unknown to many people who don’t closely follow the band. In addition to writing major hits for OneRepublic, including “Apologize” and “Counting Stars,” he’s also churned out hits for a plethora of other artists. Beyonce’s “Halo,” Adele’s “Rumour Has It” and Maroon 5’s “Love Somebody” are all credited to Tedder’s amazing talent as a songwriter.

Max Martin – With a career that took off during the 1990s, Max Martin has been a force to be reckoned with in the pop music industry for over two decades. Britney Spears took several of Martin’s songs (“…Baby One More Time,” “Oops!…I Did It Again,” “Stronger,”) to stardom around the turn of the new millennium and the Backstreet Boys had a huge hit with “I Want It That Way” in 1999. With Taylor Swift’s recording of Martin’s “We Are Never Getting Back Together” reaching number #1 on the iTunes chart in just 50 minutes, it became the fastest selling digital single ever. Kelly Clarkson’s “Since U Been Gone,” P!nk’s “So What” and Katy Perry’s “Teenage Dream” are just a few of the other songs that have earned Martin a well-deserved mention on the list of the greatest songwriters.

Justin Tranter – Although he was the lead singer of the New York rock band Semi Precious Weapons, who opened for Lady Gaga’s Monster Ball tour from 2009 to 2001, Tranter is likely more famous for writing hit songs for a variety of pop stars over the past few years. He’s behind Halsey’s “Bad at Love,” Justin Bieber’s “Sorry,” and Gwen Stefani’s “Used to Love You.” He teamed up with Julia Michaels to become a powerhouse songwriting duo on several big hits in recent years too.

Julia Michaels – Julia Michaels’s breakout single “Issues” catapulted her to stardom in 2017 but she launched her music career by writing songs for Selena Gomez (“Hands to Myself”), Justin Bieber (“Sorry”) and Nick Jonas (“Close”). Often collaborating with the aforementioned Justin Tranter, Michaels managed to add quite a few hits to her name before hitting the spotlight herself to become one of the best singer and songwriters in the last few years.

Sia Furler – Although Sia Furler finally became a household name in the states with her own hit, “Chandelier” in 2014, the Australian singer songwriter has been famous in her native country since the early 2000s. After moving to New York in 2005, she failed to break into the U.S. market as a solo artist and focused her talents as a lyric writer instead, penning hits for other musicians, including “David Guetta’s “Titanium,” Rihanna’s “Diamonds” and several songs for Christina Aguilera’s album “Bionic.” Following the success of “Chandelier,” Sia continued to find success as a singer songwriter when “Cheap Thrills,” featuring Sean Paul, hit number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2016

Bonnie McKee – With an assortment of hits by Katy Perry (“California Gurls,” “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)” and “Roar,” attributed to Bonnie McKee’s song writing talent, it’s no wonder her resume has made her one of the greatest songwriters in recent years. In fact, “Roar” earned the title of Song of the Year at the 2014 Grammy Awards, solidifying McKee’s name as one of the most sought after pop songwriters. She’s also worked with Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera and Kelly Clarkson, among other big-name artists.

Ricky Reed – The catchy Megan Trainor hit, “No,” and Jason Derulo’s “Talk Dirty,” placed Ricky Reed on the list of top songwriters in pop music. His talent is often sought-after by artists looking for a unique sound. There’s no doubt that it takes a lot of talent, persistence and a bit of luck to become one of the top songwriters in pop music but these incredible musicians are proof that the hard work pays off in the end.
